GreenS4BlackSea - Protection of Virgin Forests as a Green Solution for the Black Sea Project – Online Coordination and Planning Meeting

21 January 2026, Wednesday 126

The “Online Coordination and Planning Meeting” of the project entitled “GreenS4BlackSea - Protection of Virgin Forests as a Green Solution for the Black Sea”, implemented within the framework of the European Union Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme (Interreg VI-B), was held online on 21 January 2026. The project is led by the Ali Nihat Gökyiğit Botanical Garden Application and Research Center of Artvin Çoruh University (ANGBB), in partnership with Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University (BSU) and the Community and Environment Association (C&E) from Georgia, and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) from Greece, with the participation of representatives of all partner institutions.

The meeting began with the project partners sharing their fields of expertise and informing each other about the activities to be carried out during the first period of the GreenS4BlackSea Project, as well as the managerial and administrative procedures. Subsequently, the administrative, financial, technical, and operational issues related to Period I, which covers the initial phase of the project implementation, were discussed in detail, and a common understanding was reached on the steps to be taken to achieve the most efficient results.

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the creation of a green belt around the Black Sea for the Black Sea Basin countries—Türkiye, Georgia, and Greece—and all relevant stakeholders. By involving stakeholders in the Black Sea Basin and through strengthened partnerships and joint actions among universities in neighboring countries, the project aims to enhance the conservation and protection of biodiversity and natural heritage, to identify and map virgin forests outside protected areas, and to develop and implement methods and mechanisms for the protection of virgin forest areas.
